Problem Description
Left turn lanes are a challenge for traffic engineers. Often, safe and optimized traffic signal operation depends on reliable detection of vehicles in the left turn lanes. Understanding the instantaneous left turn demand is important to optimize, actuated traffic signal operation. At the same time, accurate, longer term left turn demand information is needed to understand periodic demand fluctuation. In many instances, people are used to count vehicles periodically and to obtain an estimate of the demand.
Solution
The Canoga™ C900 Vehicle Detectors with inductive loops or Microloop™ sensors in the left turn lanes can assist the traffic engineer with optimizing the left turn signal timing.
The C900 vehicle detector can be interfaced with:
- long inductive loops (for example, 6 ft by 40 ft inductive loops)
- multiple inductive loops connected in series, or
- 701 Microloop sensors or 702 Non-invasive Microloop sensors
C900 detection system reliably provides:
- a call output as long as vehicles are present on the inductive loops or traffic sensors and
- effectively counts the licensed vehicles entering the left turn lane for user-defined time periods.
The long loop traffic counts can be remotely downloaded using a wireless modem, eliminating the need for separate traffic count efforts.
Left turn signals can be actuated more efficiently and the stored traffic counts used for improving the timing plans or for traffic planning. It is a cost effective and accurate solution for the traffic engineer who needs to optimize the traffic signal system.
