Learn why Opticom™ priority control may be just what your department needs to ensure officer and citizen safety.
October 13, 2020 (ST. PAUL, Minn.) – After decades as the market leader in traffic signal preemption for fire and EMS, Global Traffic Technologies (GTT) is continuing its expansion into law enforcement. And from October 21-23, GTT’s range of Opticom™ solutions will be on full digital display at the IACP 2020 Virtual Training Event and Expo.
Innovative police departments like the Chula Vista (CA) Police Department are piloting the software-based, cloud-hosted emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) solution from Opticom. The technology allows enabled vehicles to request a green light upon approach to an intersection when responding to high-priority calls. Once granted, the traffic light stays green until the vehicle has safely cleared the intersection.
While EVP has been used by police departments for years, this pilot is taking the unique approach of integrating Opticom with the agency’s CAD system (in this case, Motorola) to ensure officers get to the highest-priority calls as quickly and safely as possible, while minimizing traffic disruptions by withholding EVP for calls that aren’t as critical.
What makes this possible is called incident-based preemption, which means requests for green lights will be granted for time-sensitive calls, such as a medical emergency or an active shooter, but not for other types of calls. So, your department can access the system when it’s needed, while allaying the concerns of your city’s traffic department and the larger community related to disruption, since the chance for overuse is significantly reduced.
“Law enforcement departments have a different volume of calls and dispatch behaviors, requiring features to address their specific operations,” GTT Director of Product Management Chad Mack said. “We feel incident-based preemption will ensure law enforcement officers reach the highest-priority incidents safely and quickly without excessively disrupting normal traffic flow.”
