Software-based Opticom TSP helps New York City improve bus travel times
Ultimately, the New York City software-based transit signal priority system enabled by Opticom is a groundbreaking advancement in public transportation technology. The success of this system in the United States’ most densely-populated city shows a clear path to smarter and safer mobility that other cities of all sizes can implement.
In 2017, the MTA and NYCDOT agreed to enable transit signal priority on 6,000 buses and 1,000 intersections serving 20 bus routes by 2020. Additional deployment continues today along the 2,800 miles of bus routes through the city.
Transit agencies face a number of challenges that are leading to declining ridership and changing route demands as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect operations. The looming shift to zero-emission vehicles also strains plans for infrastructure investments.
