Myrtle Beach Expands Use of its Opticom Emergency Vehicle Preemption System
Initial deployment of EVP expanded to more intersections to help city’s fire department respond to emergencies quickly and safely.
January 11, 2021 (ST. PAUL, Minn.) – After a successful initial implementation, the city of Myrtle Beach (S.C.) is expanding its deployment of the Opticom™ Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) from Global Traffic Technologies, LLC (GTT) for its fire department.
More specifically, the city is expanding its existing distributed Opticom Priority Control as a Service™ (PCaaS) deployment, adding the connected vehicle solution to three more department vehicles and another 37 more intersections within the city.
Led by Fire Chief Tom Gwyer, a 27-year department veteran, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department has been utilizing EVP on its fire trucks since 2018. When an emergency vehicle needs to navigate an intersection, the Opticom EVP system sends a request to the intersection’s controller ahead of its arrival. If the request is granted, the light turns green in time to clear a path for the emergency vehicle to travel safely and quickly through the intersection.
The city of Myrtle Beach is a popular tourist destination in South Carolina, known for its miles of sandy beaches and its plentiful golf courses. Famed television personality Vanna White was born locally, and the iconic magazine Sports Illustrated was founded at the nearby Pine Lakes Country Club in 1954.
“We’ve established a great working relationship with the city of Myrtle Beach and its fire department,” GTT President Nicole Rennalls said. “Expanding EVP to even more vehicles and intersections will help the agency better serve its community.”
