Global Traffic Technologies, LLC (GTT) has delivered Traffic Signal Priority systems to 32 intersections in the Bulgarian city of Burgas. The OpticomTM TSP system allows public transportation vehicles to be given priority signals at traffic intersections, enabling a smoother, more efficient service.
GTT’s Opticom technology is also fitted to 77 public transport buses in Burgas.
When any of these vehicles approaches one of the 32 equipped intersections, the Opticom system’s GPS and wireless communication components send a request from the bus to the traffic light controller. If the bus is late, the controller can hold the green signal longer to ensure the bus’s smooth passage and help with adherence to schedules. Once equipped, the intersections can also give a green light to ambulances, fire trucks or other emergency vehicles – which means the Municipality can benefit from GTT’s Opticom Emergency Vehicle Preemption capabilities without additional investment at the intersection.
The TSP equipment is part of the “Burgas Integrated Urban Transport Project,” which is financed by the EU Operational Programme “Regional Development 2007-2013”. The Burgas Integrated Urban Transport Project’s total cost amounts to €67 million, of which up to €47 million will be provided by the EU Cohesion Fund on a grant basis. The full project also includes the construction of a 15km Bus Rapid Transit corridor, bus depot extension, bus shelters and new multi-modal Central Bus Station and Bus Terminal construction, new CNG and clean diesel fleet acquisition, and investments in infrastructure, ticketing, and cycling and pedestrian facilities, alongside the GTT TSP system.
Burgas, the capital of Burgas Province, is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, with a population of over 200,000. More than 6,000 of this population are university students attending Burgas Free University and the Technical University of Burgas.
GTT President Doug Roberts said, “We are excited to work with Lomini, our local partner in Bulgaria, in delivering this project to the city of Burgas, helping to provide an efficient and reliable public transport system.”
