Global Traffic Technologies will highlight the ways in which smart technology use can benefit transit and emergency operations without detriment to traffic
Visitors to the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Minneapolis next week can learn about how connected cities are becoming safer and smarter.
The annual event for transportation professionals will feature a presentation by Chad Mack, product manager at Global Traffic Technologies, LLC (GTT).
“More than 3,100 cities worldwide trust GTT’s OpticomTM priority control and traffic sensing technologies, which help to make cities smarter by connecting vehicles to infrastructure,” Mack said. “As technology continues to advance, embracing solutions that improve mobility and safety will be crucial to smart, sustainable traffic operations. GTT’s mission is to work with communities and agencies to best implement those intelligent, connected technologies.”
Global Traffic Technologies (GTT) is a world leader in priority control and traffic sensing systems, with thousands of implementations of its acclaimed Opticom solutions installed globally. Opticom Transit Signal Priority (TSP) provides buses and other public transport vehicles with the ability to request green lights at intersections, allowing for better schedule adherence and headway management, while Opticom Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) systems provide emergency vehicles with green lights to allow the to attend incidents swiftly and safely.
As part of the event’s poster presentation program, Mack will discuss the ways in which signal preemption and priority have helped improve public transportation and emergency response operations without detrimental effects to general traffic. The presentation, entitled ‘Better together: Harmonizing preemption systems, signal timing to improve safety and mobility,’ features case studies that explore how agencies use intelligent transportation tools and technology – including NTCIP standards and IoT communications – to enable smarter signal priority, timing and data analytics.
The case studies will include a TSP deployment in New York City that resulted in an 18 percent improvement in bus travel times, while reducing side street delays by up to 10 percent, and a multi-department, hybrid preemption/priority solution in the Region of York, ON, that allows buses, emergency vehicles and snow plows to improve mobility and safety operations. Mack will also discuss a data-driven approach to solving delays using priority control and analytics.
His presentation takes place as part of the Connected and Automated Vehicles/Smart Communities session from 8:30-10 a.m., Wednesday, August 22.
