Patrol officer Tommy Donley shares stories about the impact of priority control he has seen first-hand in the field.
Your officers can only protect and serve if they respond to an incident safely first.
Opticom™ Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) gives police officers the green light, clearing intersections to reduce intersection crash rates by up to 70 percent and enabling officers to arrive up to 25% faster, unharmed and ready to help.
While traditional distributed (vehicle to intersection) architecture has been available for more than 50 years, advancements in cloud-based capabilities have enabled a new version of priority control for law enforcement. Dubbed “incident-based,” Opticom EVP for law enforcement now includes the option of activating and deactivating the system based on the type of dispatch. For time-sensitive calls, the system is enabled, whereas for non-time-sensitive calls, the system is disabled.
Learn how signal preemption can get officers on-scene safely with minimal disruptions to traffic operations.

Opticom is designed to work seamlessly in the background, with no additional interaction required by the driver beyond their standard driver training. As such, the Opticom system includes a variety of methods to activate preemption.
A new feature of Opticom is incident-based preemption. Incident-based preemption allows for preemption to be activated based on pre-determined incident types and/or priority levels by integrating Opticom with the department’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. With this approach, public safety leaders can collaborate with their local traffic engineering department to determine the specific emergency situations that warrant the use of emergency vehicle preemption, as programmed in the public safety CAD system.
During operation, the Opticom system will then receive the incident information from the CAD and enable preemption for vehicles dispatched to high-priority incidents only. Incident-based preemption minimizes disruption to everyday traffic flow by providing preemption to the highest priority emergency situations, while alleviating concerns related to overuse of the system.
Alternatively, Opticom can be configured to leverage inputs such as vehicle ignition, light bar and/or turn signal status, to determine preemption behavior throughout a response run. Optionally, GTT can include a switch for manual preemption.
